Right, get ready to rumble you pixel artists, there's a contest about! It's time to beautify deviantART a bit so get your pixel punting boots on. Your task, should you decide to accept it: redesign the icon used for Avatars on this site.

Here's the current one:

You need to think how to best communicate the idea of an 'avatar' in this small space. What does an avatar mean? Is it a portrait, a snapshot of work or a visual joke? How can you come up with something that just screams AVATAR?

If you don't know what an avatar is or want some inspiration, try consulting the Wikipedia definition for a good idea.

The Deadline: 20th December 2005,
Size: 16 x 16 pixels,
Format: .gif,
Other guidlines: No animation please, and obviously it all has to be your own work.

Submit by: Uploading your entry to dA as a normal deviation in Contests > Avatar Gallery Icon, then leave a comment in this journal with a link to the deviation. You can enter as many times as you like.

Entries will be judged on: design, looks and communication.

Once the deadline has passed, all entries will be collected together in a big hat and the best three will be chosen. First place will be used on the site and the author will recieve a whole year's subscription. There will also be cool prizes for second and third.

Nice idea. While you're at it, do you think you can change the weird heart thing for the emoticon gallery to an actual emote? I'll make one if you want.

I quite like the heart actually. I don't think an emote with a character like :) would be appropriate. You're free to make any design changes you want though and I'll consider them.

I'm definently entering this, even if there wasn't a prize. I just joined DA after the competition for the new pixel art avatar, so I'm glad I have an opportunity to get in on this one. :nod:
